Meetup.com for Sydney?

Is there anything like meetup.com for Sydney, Australia? There is meetup.com, of course, but there don't seem to be too many people from Sydney, there. (I'm visiting from the Washington, D.C. area, so perhaps I'm spoiled.)

As a Sydneysider, I've never heard of such a thing, and doubt it would take off it were launched. Though some of us are quite nice, Sydney has a deserved reputation in Australia as a socially insular, cliquey city in which it's difficult to make friends easily.

Also a Sydneysider - no such thing as far as I know and agree with Fiasco da Gama - it's not the Australian way. Hanging out at a local pub is, perhaps, the best way to proceed, and I would say that you can find your demographic by finding the right part of town and the right pub. Sydney is somewhat tribe-like in terms of the sort of people you can expect to find in the North, South, East, Inner West and West. I've lived in Sydney all my life & I'm afraid of visiting meetup.com on a work computer because all I can think is that it's some sort of casual sex hookup site.

If it's just a site you go to in order to meet people to, idunno, talk shit or something, then my reaction probably tells you exactly how foreign that concept is.

you know, you *could* always organise a meetup. that's what edd did when he visited sydney, and it was a pretty good afternoon all round, i think.

we're not exactly averse to a glass or two of beer ;)

Turns out I have to go elsewhere in Australia for a while, but I may well set up a meetup for when I get back here. Thanks for the suggestion.
