Trying to find a Mech Warrior Cartoon from the 80s

I am looking for a cartoon from the 80s that I can't remember the name of. It had an aircraft carrier in space that sent jets down to earth. There was even an old school Captain that steered the space carrier. The pilots could transform them into a "mech warrior" of sorts. It wasn't Transformers that I am sure of. They were protecting us from something that came from space.
There was also a sub-plot/love story as some of the pilots hung out/dated.
The cartoon was definitely Japanese.

Space Battleship Yamato was recut as Starblazers when it was released in the US.

Definitely Robotech, and more specifically, the Macross section of the storyline which comprised the first 36 episodes.

To clarify, it isn't starblazers. When I first read the question, I somehow glossed over the transforming plane part of it. Star Blazers is definitely wrong.

Nothing in Star Blazers transformed.
Well, Nova transformed me. But I don't think that counts.
