Where do I get a tiny water dish May 16, 2008 2:33 AM Subscribe
I want a pet rock for my cubicle. Obtaining the rock isn't a problem, however I also want a mini water dish for it. Don't ask. Anyone know where I could obtain a 1" or so pet water dish? posted by hungrysquirrels to grab bag (21 comments total)

Think outside the box. A bottle cap, lids from various energy drinks - those would make convincing pet dishes at the right size. posted by annathea at 2:45 AM on May 16
I see lots of "Doll House Pet Dish" and "Doll House Dog Food Dish" items on eBay. Some of them look damn convincing, and they're like three dollars. posted by rokusan at 3:28 AM on May 16
Possibly a plastic cap from a small yoghurt (kids size?). Your pet rock sounds really cute, will you please post a photo for us :)? posted by katala at 4:01 AM on May 16 [1 favorite]
Toy aisle? I'm sure Barbie or one of those other dolls has some pet accessories that are in the right scale.
Alternately, hardware store: plumbing or maybe electrical fixtures, like endcaps for pipes, should be the right shape and are often less than a dollar. posted by cobaltnine at 4:07 AM on May 16
Another alternative: a plastic sewing thimble, cut down to proper size. They're surprisingly easy to cut with a utility knife, and some are even striated in a way that would give you a guide. posted by Dreama at 4:20 AM on May 16
If you know any medical students or doctors, you should be able to get a teensy petri dish. posted by Shepherd at 4:21 AM on May 16
Go with the smallest ceramic ramekin you can find. They are sold for food preparation, so they may have that look you are going for. posted by Jason and Laszlo at 4:59 AM on May 16
They make tiny dishes (sometimes with pretty patterns on) for calligraphy ink (the kind with a brush, not a pen). Your local art supply store could be worth a gander! posted by giraffe at 5:39 AM on May 16
One of these stainless steel sauce cups might work; this was the first place I saw them online but they are usually pretty easy to find locally in sets of 4; they are also handy in the kitchen so having the extras shouldn't be a problem. posted by TedW at 5:42 AM on May 16
Now that I figured out their proper name (I had always called the au jus cups), searching for "sauce cup" will get you a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials to choose from. posted by TedW at 5:48 AM on May 16
Well there is this or this, but if your pet rock is going to be drinking a lot of water you might need one of these too... posted by esilenna at 6:25 AM on May 16 [1 favorite]
Polly Pocket is another line of teeny toys. Here is an example of a set that includes dog bowls. You might try a KMart or Wal-mart for knock-offs if you want to go cheap.
And try posting a request on Freecycle. You might be able to get just a bowl without having to spring for an entire set of playthings. (Unless, maybe, you'd like to dress up your rock and put a wee leash on it, which actually sounds kind of fun.) posted by SuperSquirrel at 6:37 AM on May 16
Definitely try the doll-house area of a crafts store (like Michael's). Lots of tiny things!
Here's a site with a Tiny Pet Dish! posted by that girl at 6:42 AM on May 16
If I were a rock, I don't know if I'd like to be drinking out of a bottle cap. Probably would want to go with a hand-crafted one made out of Fimo, or lacking craft skills, opting for a doll dish but only if it was made of china. Not IN China. There's a diff. posted by watercarrier at 6:54 AM on May 16 [1 favorite]
I'm pretty sure Littlest Pet Shop was made for pet rocks (found either online or in your local Kmart). posted by artifarce at 9:06 AM on May 16
Go to any sushi restaurant and nab a little soy-sauce bowl. posted by nicwolff at 11:21 AM on May 16
Some good ideas here to explore. It's occurred to me it will also need a second dish for 'food', filled with small pebbles or cleaned gravel. posted by hungrysquirrels at 11:25 AM on May 16 [1 favorite]
