Thunderbird/IMAP doesn't update correctly

Why do messages keep showing up as new / undeleted in my IMAP Thunderbird e-mail?

I'm not sure if this is an issue with the IMAP server or my settings in Thunderbird, but at least a couple of times a day I'll mark an e-mail as read or delete an e-mail, and then a few minutes later the e-mails show back up either as unread or undeleted. I'm guessing it has to do with the timing of when Thunderbird checks the server, or maybe something is not getting correctly updated. The server administrator can be somewhat unresponsive, so if there's something I can try while I wait to hear from him, I'd appreciate it.

Best answer: Several problems related to failures of synchronization between IMAP servers and Thunderbird clients seem to generate the same suggested advice from Thunderbird mavens: Compact Folders. Frequently.

Response by poster: So this is most likely a Thunderbird problem?

Response by poster: Update: frequent, active compacting of folders solves this problem.
