On the road again

Is there an online resource for finding and viewing eclectic & eccentric motel/motor lodges that are preferably non-chain & independently owned?

I plan to be traveling around the eastern half of the U.S. (basically the parts of the U.S. east of the Mississippi River, but not new england or NY/NJ) for a month this summer/autumn. Id love to find motels that haven't changed their architecture since the 50s 60s 70s or 80s and/or have interesting/older furniture and decor. Theme motels would be very cool, as well. Amenities are not nearly as important as uniqueness. Half-star and one-star places can be cool finds too.

Ive tried to go the expedia/hotwire/travelocity route and they don't seem to have what I'm looking for. I also found motelguide.com, but there are no links or pictures or details, just lists of phone numbers. interestingly enough, roadsideamerica.com didnt have anything like this either (their listings are mostly big-chain)

Since the motel would be the next day's destination, pictures of the exterior and an interior of a representative interior are a must.

If anyone has any specific recommendations, they would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
