Looking for a Ceiling Medallion with a large diameter hole

In our home we have two interesting light fixtures consisting of draped crystal pendants. They stand out a bit from the bare and somewhat boring ceiling. We'd like to add a ceiling medallion to create a little more visual balance but I can't find one with a large enough hole. Has anyone had any luck finding a medallion with a hole diameter of 12" or so?

I don't know the specifics of how your light hardware is made, but if it's anything like any light I have ever dealt with, you don't need to worry about the hole diameter, as long as you have a relatively flat area in the center 12 inches of the medallion.

As long as the wires and hardware fit through the hole, and the center 12 inches can be covered without looking weird, then you should be ok. For example, this one from your second link could possibly work. The light could just snug up against it, holding it in place.

I hope I explained that clearly. Let me know if I need to clarify. It's early for a Saturday.

D'oh. I was working under the assumption that the medallion would encircle the fixture and would be adhered/screwed to the ceiling. I'll have to examine the light more closely because it looks like it may be difficult to remove from the ceiling without damaging the plaster. Thanks for the suggestion, it makes more sense than my initial thought!

There should be a way to unscrew the whole fixture from the box in the ceiling. I don't think you'll damage the plaster, but if there is some overlapping paint on the fixture you might have to be careful to not let it peel.

There might be a bracket that holds all the crystals, which can be removed before removing the fixture itself. Of course this all has to be done with the power off to the room.

Removing and replacing fixtures is generally not that difficult. But if you haven't done it before, it's probably best to call in a favor from someone who has.

Good luck!

Have you thought about stenciling or free painting a design around it? This could be flat or trompe l'oeil. ( From the looks of that fixture, I think a medalion like the ones you link would detract. If you're not confident about doing this yourself, contact the interior design department at a local university and see if they can hook you up with someone.
