A friend and I are holidaying in Helston, Cornwall next week. We have four days covered doing the Lizard section of the South-West Coastal Walk, but I'm looking for ideas on how to spend the rest of the time. We tentatively plan to visit the Eden Project, but I'm somewhat concerned about crowds and queues given that it's the school holidays. Anyone have any experience of visiting during the summer? Also any other tips on Helston and it's surrounds? Things to do indoors if the Great British Summer deteriorates once more? (we have sitting in the pub drinking beer covered). Good eateries with a decent vegetarian menu? Preferably (though not essentially) reachable by public transport from Helston.

St Ives is supposed to be very nice, although despite living in Plymouth I've never been there - there's a Tate Gallery and various other art galleries, although it'll probably be busy (as will most of Cornwall).

There's the National Seal Sanctuary in the village of Gweek, not far from Helston; there's the Goonhilly Earth Satellite Station. Further afield, St. Ives and Penzance are both worth a look, as is St. Michael's Mount. I can't say I was that impressed with the Tate in St. Ives. For some industrial heritage, you could check out the Geevor tin-mine museum, but that might be a little harder to get at using public transport. For me though, the main attraction in Cornwall is the coastline & the ocean... It's peak season & will probably be busy most everywhere.

If we ever get to Cornwall, we'll be staying at Meaver Farm in Mullion : it looks pretty, they're very nice people, and they make great yarn. So if you're into sheepy things, that's an idea.
