How do I get gum off the bottom of my shoe?

My favorite pair of boots are covered in gum on the bottom of them... And the gum seems to have collected various other fun items. So how should I properly clean them?

I've dissolved old gum with a bit of petrol on cotton wool. Advantage: effective. Disadvantage: smelly.

Goo gone.

Thanks to my friend for doing her 7th grade science fair project on this very topic.
