Darkon - What happened next?

Friends and I saw Darkon this weekend. Given that many of us (not me) are historians, the question was, "What happened next?" (spoilers)

We checked out the game site. Mordom now appears to be a defunct country while Laconia seems to still be in the game.

So what happened? At the end of Darkon the Movie, one might have predicted a very different status by now. Our best guess is that the player of Keldar, the leader of Mordom, left the gaming club to pursue his full-time paid career and the game play story evolved around that.

I have a co-worker who may have at one time played, but I really don't want to have to ask him, because it seems like even asking the question could rapidly degenerate into TMI, or at the very least a too-close-to-the-action-perspective-on-the-whole-thing.

Anybody know of another source for history of the gaming club's story arc that doesn't involve joining?

Maybe someone at the gaming club would clue you in?

ian1977, thanks for the suggestion. Interestingly, player contacts are still listed for Mordom, and one of them is also the New Player Liason, which begs the question of whether the information is up to date, but also means I have a fall back position if asked why I am being irritating by asking. (Hey, don't blame me, your contact info is out of date!)

Email dispatched to drakeg_1999 at yahoo dot com. Will update here if an answer is forthcoming.

I got an answer from drakeg_1999 at yahoo dot com.

Here are his own words, quoted with his permission:
Mordom, as in the 'Brotherhood of the Crimson Gryphon' is still very much alive and kicking in Darkon, we are changing and adapting but still fighting for Blood, Honor, Wealth, and the Glory of Kodos. We are still one of the toughest fighting and adventuring units in the Realm.

What no longer exists is our Empire, what we humbly (note sarcasm is intended here, we have never been humble about anything) refered to as the 'Greater Mordomian Co-Prosperity Sphere.'

A year and a half ago, on the 20th anniversary of our Founding, we burned our cities, castles, and other structures to the ground and abandoned all of our land holdings. We were not at War, nor at threat by any other country, indeed the events from the documentary were our last War in our old form. We did this by choice.

The reasons are long and complex both In Charachter (IC) and Out Of Character (OOC) but I will try to sum it up.

IC we did this because our God told us to. Kodos looked upon His Children and found us wanting (he's a harsh diety really, we never seem to satisfy him). He presented many in the Brotherhood with Visions and we determined that He was displeased at how far we had strayed from our roots and the One True Path. When we were young we built the greatest Empire the Realm has ever seen by cunning, skill, devotion, sacrifice, and a lot of luck. It is very different when you are the largest, wealthiest, country ever. You have the most allies, potential rivals fear you, and your military forces reign supreme. Many built in advantages to maintaining the Empire, not exactly fair. Kodos judged that we were Fat, Lazy, and most importantly Un-Worthy.

So the Brotherhood determined that to be true to who were were we would declare Victory in the game of Empire and make our way through the Realm as a group of Kodist Warriors and Adventurers surviving once again by our wits and steel. So we torched everything and started over. :)

OOC we did this because the Game was becoming un-fun for many of us. Darkon is a great hobby, my favorite game ever. But year after year of being the big bad guys and constantly winning was getting old. I know that may sound weird, you play a game to win right? And trust me winning felt great for a long time. But once you have an unbeaten record for 20 years the stress of not blowing your streak begins to out-weigh the joy of victory if that makes any sense.

Also, so many of us had gotten old were physically worn, had families or careers that intefered with the game (can you believe the priorities of some people?), that it was not as much fun for these people and had begun to feel like a burden to Field when the Country called upon them. This allowed many of our older and busier Brothers to in effect retire from the game with Honor.

So thats why in a nutshell.

That is a great response from drakeg. I like how he described the burden of winning all the time.

Yes, and it should be noted that drakeg is actually Kenyon Wells, the leader of Mordom within the documentary.
