Where can I find mall and department store sales statistics?

I have a close friend who wants to rent out a space in the mall to start up a formal dress shop but she's been looking for some hard numbers on when to expect more or less sales during the year.

We have a general idea (prom season and major holidays), but are there any department stores, malls, or etc. that make this information public? Or a place with national averages? A weekend to weekend or month to month breakdown would be helpful. It'd be nice to know when the slumps and highs are so she can hire appropriate amounts of help.

From my experience working with a department store, sales figures and statistics stay as closely hidden as they can legally manage.

thats not to say they there might not be something out there. But it might take some digging. Good luck. Most stores may not be enthusiastic about releasing details to potential competitors.

ShopperTrak may be just what you're looking for. They have a business where they measure the people coming in and out of stores with little cameras, and they then collate the data from all their stores and sell it to business analysts and the like. I don't know if this is exactly the kind of information your friend wants, but it may be helpful. Their data's not cheap, though...
