classic pc video game filter: does anyone remember this game: used to be a free download way back in the dawn of the internet. what i remember.... it was a game racing some sort of airplane or anti-gravity car. (similar to a more modern game called wipeout pure). it was a free download, and if im not mistaken it was actually from or sponsored by Microsoft to show off directx. The time frame would have been '96 or '97.

Yup sounds like Hover. And I think it cam pre-installed on a bunch of computers.

Definitely Hover. It came on the Windows 95 CD along with Weezer's Buddy Holly video.

You're right, it was a demo. It was oddly fun though.

oh my gosh.... i totally forgot about this. how weird. the unfortunate part is that although this so fits the bill, its not the one im looking for.... this one was explicitly racing based. fixed track, you against the computer, i even remember that after the race finished it showed a fixed perspective shot of you crossing the finish line.... any thoughts?

for what it's worth i also seem to keep coming up with the name canyon racer but google searches have led me to a flash game and to a NFS carbon game.... i also got stuck with the name ridge racer for awhile but that too is a different console based game.

(btw, i totally just played hover for 25 minutes!!!)

was it Hi-Octane? Doesn't fit any of your other descriptions - wasn't an advert for directx or free download that i remember, but i played this constantly around the timeframe you speak of.
