Where should we go after Munich for our summer holidays

Cosmopolitan, chilled out, cultural, lots to see and do all within reach of Munich....within flying, train or driving reach that is.

We (my wife and I) are going on holiday this summer starting in Munich for four days, we then would like to head somewhere else for four days and then finally somewhere else beforeflying back to the UK.

We went to Berlin last year and absolutely loved it and then Amsterdam - which aside from the seedy side, loved it too.

We like nice bars, restaurants, famous architecture, galleries of famous artists - and not so - and we like live music.

We also love history, so Berlin was ideal for the mix available.

I'd really appreciate some ideas.

Thanks

TC

Best answer: Salzburg, Austria is a quick train ride away. Lovely little town.

seconding Salzburg. It has beautiful architecture, history, touristy things, and a pretty happening night life (including an irish pub!!!)

It also has the original Mozart chocolate store. mmmmmm. This is the second time in two days that I've pimped mozart chocolates, and now I REALLY want one.

I would consider Bamberg. It's one of the few cities in Germany that wasn't shelled or bombed much in either world wars. There's a Palace where Napoleon wintered, a cathedral that was, for a time, the center of the Holy Roman Empire, an ancient hilltop tower, a couple abbeys, 10 or so gasthauses and pubs that have brewed their beer traditionally for hundreds of years (Bamberg is most famous for rauchbier, a warm, sour brew that seems alright at first, and then a few days later you wake up in a pool of blood and vomit with a cobblesone pattern embossed on your face. Nine months later, you're someone's dad.*), a couple of Abbeys, an old Rathaus (better than it sounds), lovely riverwalk, old-school euro pedestrian area/marketplace, blah blah blah. Anyway, it's quite a lovely town. You may want to consider it.

Salzburg was my first thought but if you consider Amsterdam and Berlin to be near enough to each other to do on the same trip then certainly you should consider Prague as part of your trip to Munich, as well as Vienna and (I guess) Budapest. Four days would be a lot for Salzburg, I think, but not enough for Munich.

Nthing Salzburg; Vienna is nice too but pretty expensive.

If you are feeling more adventurous and want to really get out of the German/Austrian culture bubble, check out the TUIfly airline for cheaper flights out of Munich.

I flew with them to Cairo from Munich last February for about 150 dollars roundtrip, and had an amazing trip. We stayed for five days, and it was only about a five hour flight.
