Where can I find this skirt?

I'm a poor grad student and not the fashionable type, but I've lately been trying to expand my wardrobe. This (long, somewhat fitted denim) skirt has caught my fancy, and I've googled up and down and sideways to no avail. Help, please.

You could try emailing The Sartorialist in case he remembers talking to her about the skirt.

I know I seem say this every time a thread like this is opened. But, that is a fairly simple skirt (ok, it's very simple). A seamstress could make that for you in an afternoon.

(I swear, I think I need to start some sort of seamstress/taylor directory.)

Since it's getting on summer, finding a long denim skirt will get harder and harder. If you live near a city, I've found the so-called "urban" boutiques tend to carry items in denim like this. I only found one thing even close to that, and it was a denim pencil skirt at old navy (fitted, but not super long. Cute pockets though).

There are a lot of seamstresses/ tailors on Etsy. You could submit an Alchemy request with a link to the photo.

Looking at the construction of that skirt, I'm actually going to guess that it might be something that was made from a pair of wide-legged pants. The waistband is pretty much exactly what you'd expect from a pair of jeans, as is the fly. Then there's that seam running directly down the front, the placement of the pockets, and the existence of a "cuff" at the bottom, all of which make me think that this woman bought some big, gorgeous pants and made them (or had them made) into a skirt by cutting up the legs and stitching them together. You might just want to go to a thrift store, get some vintage jeans, and see if you can't get someone to replicate the effect.

I want to agree more with Help, I can't stop talking!'s hypothesis that there is a possibility that this woman may have in fact bought a pair of wide-leg jeans and turned them into a skirt. I say this because I saw a pair of pants matching the construct of this skirt almost exactly the same about two or three seasons ago (I think it was Urban Outfitters, but not sure). A bit of a higher waist with a nautical meets 70s feel with the wide legs and large front pockets. And the part that sells me most that these are quite possibly a previous pair of pants is definitely the waist. It looks like the worn in waist on a pair of jeans. That wrinkle you get from sitting, squatting, walking, running, what have you in a pair of jeans. Not saying that she couldn't have worn that waist in herself, but it looks too much like pants waist than skirt waist, which takes me to my second point.

If she did not take a pair of pants to make into a skirt, and this is in fact part of some line, I'm going to have to say that this is part of a line/brand that's not going to be easily found like at the Gap or Old Navy. You might find a somewhat similar facsimile, but again the construct of this particular skirt makes me think it wouldn't be a common brand, because it's striving for a certain look. Like you can practically see the thought process of the person who designed this. It's a "Yes, these could've been pants" look. Again, I point to the waist. It's an insane attention to detail to track down a piece of denim to look like the worn in waist to someone's old comfy jeans. It's too much purpose and thought for something you'd see mass-produced, and even if it was mass-produced, this is a very certain specific type of look which would point to a certain season for a particular brand rather than something you can just pick up any time. Most mass-produced denim skirts don't have this cut and look, even the longer ones.

If you really want this particular pair I'd say that you do track down a pair of vintage (or one that fits this skirt) wide-legged jeans and just take that to a seamstress or something. And I bet doing that would create a more intresting signature piece for your wardrobe like it did for this woman. The alternative is going to be that you try to narrow down all the brands to the ones that you know tailor to this particular look and would have a higher likelihood of having a skirt that is like this while trying to figure out where to buy long denim skirts in the increasingly warmer weather.

Response by poster: I do know a great seamstress, so I think I'll go to my local thrift store one of these days and see if I can find some jeans that would work. If I'm lucky, I bet I could get it made for < $40. Thanks everyone!
