My google-fu is failing me on this one. Years ago I found a program that would take all the email I recieved, add it to a database and then it would run some algorithm to associate all of the email information together; essentially tagging it all. I was then able to open up their web interface and search for any topic I wished from my past emails. Think of tagging bookmarks ala del.ic.ious but for email but it auto-tagged everything on it's own. Basically the flow of email would be Exchange server -> "this program" -> Outlook. I vaguely recall that the program was written in Java and was freely available.

Sounds like Zoë. It looks like the main site at http://guests.evectors.it/zoe/ is gone, and only the SourceForge site is left. Jon Udell has some screenshots in this article.

Yep, Zoë. If you're looking for an alternative that's still being worked on, albeit one based around the command line, sup might be worth a look.

I have been using Zoe for years. I still do. Be aware that since it was written in Java, and Java has changed over time, running Zoe now generates lots of error messages and warnings because of the language changes, so you can get some huge log files depending on how it is installed. I also have to assign it extra memory when it runs, or it dies. A source to help you do this is the Zoe Docs Home.

It is a shame it isn't being worked on any more. It is a great program.
