Non-binary fink install?

I'm a little unclear on the concept - Does the lack of a fink binary distribution for 10.5 mean that every package has to be built from scratch?

i know this doesn't answer the question, but fink has been supplanted by macports, which also seems to be a non-binary package manager.

I was aware of macports but has it really replaced fink? I thought they were sort of concurrent, but I may be wrong...

Perhaps sxtxixtxcxh is confusing fink with darwinports (macports' old name)?
