What's up with this Central Park bench plaque?

Here's an interesting article. It doesn't give a direct answer, but it sounds like the bench-adopter can have the plaque say whatever they want, and it probably is just personal to that individual.

MTI1998 sounds like initials and a date (of death?) of course. I have no clue what the other number might be.

I can't find anything on numbering conventions, but could it be a police badge number? My google searches just turned up infuriating posts by police officers about "professional courtesy" and "discretion."
