Grapes in milk... now what?

Recently, someone recommended that I try putting grapes in milk and drinking / eating it. It was more delicious than I expected. Are there any other unusual / unexpectedly delicious food combinations that might make our super boring dining hall more of an adventure? A delicious adventure?

Doubly wierd because I dropped in thinking about asking a similar question (accidental discoveries prompted by dropping a raspberry in a glass of apple juice - delicious!).

Dark chocolate drizzled over {salted popcorn, salted pretzels, salted peanuts}.

Yoghurt on toast is also good. Especially with fruit on top of the yoghurt.

Bacon and Dates go surprisingly well together. However, I forbid this to become another bacon is awesome thread.

This rasberry-chipotle sauce goes really well with Brie.

White bread and macaroni salad sandwiches.

I liked to take mac and cheese that has a nice skin on it, and take that skin and put it inside a nice, squishy dinner role. I also have used Cool Ranch Doritos as a burger condiment. And dipping hot, salty french fries in a chocolate shake is sick-tasty.

I used to smoke pot.

Also, peanuts and grapes are pretty good together.

Peanut butter on apples is good. Sour cream on toast pwns youghurt on toast imho, jam is good all mixed in. I've heard black pepper on vanilla ice cream is good, can't speak from experience though.

It's not a combo, but making concentrated OJ in a blender instead of stirring it with a spoon is all sorts of wicked goodness.

you must expand your grapes-in-milk journey to include grapes-in-cereal-in-milk. Obviously, it only works with certain cereals. No sugary ones. The best: cheerios and rice k's. You can thank me later.

The question is good weird though. I look forward to more deliciousness!

Ice cream and/or peanut butter with just about everything but especially fruit. Ice cream to make it tastier and peanut butter to make it more substantial. Grilled peanut butter and marshmallow sandwiches. Pancakes or eggos can substitute as bread for most sandwiches. Smoothies are also good for weird combinations and a good way to sneak healthy foods in with unhealthy ones.

Bananas and cheese! Bananas and cheese! I love this, and when anyone sees me do it they always look at me strangely, try it themselves, and acknowledge that it's, in fact, pretty good. The cheese should be sharp, but not too sharp. American is fine, but Kraft Singles will work excellently.

Cucumbers and milk (well, put some vinegar in the milk to sour it, then add salt and pepper). Everyone in my family but me loved this.

On the subject of unexpected things to do with grapes, if your dining hall has a make-your-own omelet thing (mine did, on occasion) you might investigate whipping up sausages with grapes, from the NY TImes food blog. A bed of sauteed grapes is really quite delicious, particularly with herby sausage drippings.

Explore your salad bar, if you're not already a frequent visitor to it, and freakin' get those ingredients miscegenating. It's all too easy to go through the main chow line and have somebody scoop up the entree of the day, but you can make delicious and nutritious bowls of weirdness from the stuff on the salad bar. Lettuce, carrots, beets, raisins, crispy chow mein noodles, grape nuts and bleu cheese dressing never tasted so good!

I enjoyed the occasional peanut butter, grape nut and bbq sauce sandwich also. YMMV, but I'd take it back to the dorm and pair it with a medium bodied American ale.

Make a vinegary cole slaw with onion. Very little mayo. Forget any sweetening sugar, pickles, etc. It really should come close to making you cry.

Take 2 slices of rye bread. Place one half slice of cheddar cheese (thin) on bread.

Slop on a bunch of slaw, then put on a ton of black pepper.

Enjoy!

This isn't a combination, but I have to rave about it nonetheless: uncooked, mostly-unthawed frozen french fries. You specifically need to find a (usually discount) brand that neither coats the fries with any sort of batter-esque stuff or salts them too much.

I also have used Cool Ranch Doritos as a burger condiment.

Or Nacho flavored Doritos on a tuna sandwich. Especially if you don't have any lettuce or celery to add the crunch to the tuna salad.

In the "things to put in celery" category, my favorite is pineapple cream cheese (Actually Kraft Pineapple Cheese) and walnuts. So fifties suburbia but so yummy!

Ingredients: scrambled eggs, hash browns, onion bagel, cream cheese, Tapatio, ketchup, cracked pepper, lobster bib.

Step 1: Toast onion bagel, and smear with cream cheese.
Step 2: After cooking, mix hashed browns with copious amounts of Tapatio.
Step 3: Pour ketchup on scrambled eggs, mix well.
Step 4: Take hash browns and layer them on top of bagel. Smoosh down with fork.
Step 5: Take scrambled eggs+ketchup, and gingerly layer them atop the hash browns. Again, smoosh down with fork.
Step 6: Crack pepper over your mountain of yum.
Step 7 (Optional): Smear 2nd half of bagel with cream cheese, and top off your concoction.
Step 8: Devour! Rejoice!

(The bib is because things can get messy.)

Also, our local pizzeria makes a veggie pizza to die for. They use pesto instead of marinara, and top it with mozzarella, artichoke hearts, garlic, tomatoes, red onions, and cashews. It's really the last ingredient that makes it so magical. If you eat this drizzled with our not-so-secret-sauce (Tapatio* + ranch dressing), you will be in flavor heaven.

Ooooo, also: blueberries with candied pecans and balsamic vinaigrette. Mmmmmmm, delicious!

* We go through a lot of Tapatio in our house....

This might be a little on the obvious side of weird, but: any toffee-based ice cream (Friendly's used to make a nougat-flavored one, with caramel and chocolate and toffee bits, that is A> amazing and B> gone) plus Cinnamon Toast Crunch + honey makes for the single greatest sundae I have ever had. Try not to let the honey freeze too much. This also works with vanilla-based ice cream, and cookie dough is pretty good, but the ultimate version definitely takes toffee.

Peanut butter has been suggested as an addition, but the original version is so close to deadly that I haven't yet tried it.

On preview: Maple syrup + cereal is pretty similar. It's on my list to try now.

Was more intrigued with the consistency of salt/sweet in a thread otherwise rife with huge variety of the 'unlikely' combos. It made me think, whether or not justified, of a bachelor-type (did I just stereotype?) tendency for reaching into the fridge/cupboard late at night and concocting new solutions with whatever was there --

Anyway then I realized what I'd left out of my earlier post: my other salty/sweet-tooth favorite, potato chips dipped in applesauce.

Count me among the Wendy's fries-dunked-in-a-Frostee fans, too.

Chocolate chip mint ice cream (Breyer's is my favorite for this) with salted Spanish peanuts (the kind with the red skins). So goddamed good. I used to laugh at my dad for eating this when I was a kid but I have grown to love it.

More peanut butter love!
My dad liked peanut butter and onion sandwiches. My mom liked peanut butter, pickle, and mayo sandwiches. From my dad, I learned to smear a layer of peanut butter on top of a grilled cheese sandwich. From my mom, I learned to make a breakfast of bread, peanut butter, and an arrangement of the little marshmallows toasted under the broiler until the marshmallows got kind of blackened and crunchy of top, but still all melty underneath.

Oh, and my late granddad used to put a handful of Spanish peanuts into a bottle of Coca-Cola. Sweet, salty, carbonated, and crunchy!

I feel so sorry for all the folks with peanut allergies!

God, I'm starving now.

Had a friend in college who used to douse his fries in a mixture of mayo, mustard (the bright yellow kind) and horseradish. We thought it was to keep us from eating his fries, because it looked so gross. Then I tried it: Heaven!

And this: mix sour cream and dark brown sugar, use as dip for fruit. Grapes are perfect.

Way late to the party here, but I've enjoyed eating Wendy's fries along with their Frostys. The hot, dry, salty fries and the cold, dripping sweetness of the Frosty really clicked.

Also, my mother loves to tell people about how she used to drop roasted peanuts into her bottled Coca-Cola as a kid. I've never tried it, though.

On preview: Wow, half of Metafilter is jonesing for the french fry-Frosty mix.

The Undercheese Sandwich

Melt some sharp cheddar in a small frying pan. When it gets bubbly, crack two eggs on top. Pepper the tops. When the whites are firm and cataracts develop, very carefully loosen the cheese from the pan and flip the eggs. Flatten them with the spatula to pop the yolks.

Then, while they're finishing, put some ketchup on bread, either raw or blue-rare toasted. Decorate the cheese side of your eggs with some hot sauce, and assemble your sandwich. This is also good in a tortilla.

My friend invented Tortilla French Toast. It is surprisingly soft and delicious, and a serving for two will use up two tortillas and one egg, and just a bit of cinnamon sugar.

Saltine crackers or cookies dipped in coffee

Saltine crackers dipped in water

pizza dipped in ranch salad dressing

pickle or onion and mayonnaise sandwiches

water-packed tuna (drained) mixed with mashed potatoes, usually scooped with saltine crackers

peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches (a fav. of my sisters though I never tried)

My grandmother used to make this really simple yellow cake without frosting that she called a one egg cake. At family dinners, all the kids used to drenched their pieces in the soup left over from the boiled potatoes. It sounds gross but was really good.

My fiancé turned me onto avocado mixed with banana and lemon juice, slightly sweetened with sugar or honey if you want. My mother will not even taste it based on looks alone, but it actually tastes good. He also made me avocado mixed with onion and hard-boiled egg which is good on toast.

Not as weird as some of the suggestions above, but pizza with pineapple and hot peppers is fantastic. Sweet, salty, and spicy.

Also, salsa and hummus on your bread/pita/cracker of choice is great, but salsa and hummus on french toast is even better. (I once half-scared my dad into thinking I was pregnant by eating this combo in front of him.)

When I was a growing teenager, I ate a lot, like many a growing boy is wont to do.

After a day with the normal trifecta of meals, combined with the general snacking/grazing along the way, night would come. Like many a growing boy, I enjoyed staying up late and sleeping in the next morning. This, however, presented a problem: I needed additional nutritional sustenance during those long evening hours to maintain my blood sugar at a sufficient level to keep my eyelids aloft.

Enter nachos. My preference was hand-grated sharp cheddar from the brick-sized blocks of generic brand that mom got at the store, heavily piled over a plate full of Tostitos. Microwave for 1 minute and 20 seconds at high power, depending on your microwave.

About an hour after that the crushing urge for ice cream would strike and I would promptly destroy a little less than half a gallon of it, were that much available.

This became a nightly routine, until the day my brother made a fabulous observation, along the lines of "if you love it so much why don't you just marry it?" Which is exactly what I did.

The day you, gentle reader, make the glorious transition to the world of nacho-cheese-covered-chip-dipped-in-mint-chocolate-chip-ice-cream, you too, will be enlightened. I envy you this virginal experience. It was the best day of my life.

Once night while tending bar I had yet another annoying group of customers ask me to invent a new shot for them. At our bar, which had a lot of college students, this was a frequent request, and it was always annoying, especially when we were busy, which we usually were. I spied a bottle of Pepto Bismol and mixed it with Blue Curaçao (equal parts), gave it a taste, and called it Sweetheart. It tasted exactly like those candy hearts you get at Valentine's Day, the ones that say "be mine" and stuff. Those kids loved it and were none the wiser.
