Going to India - Quick Lonely Planet lookup help please!!! My Goa Lonely Planet Guide has NV Guest House (in Calangute) on the map, but no description for it (!) Can someone please help out and let me know what other Lonely Planet Guides (South India, India, etc) has/have written about it?? Like prices and such... TIA

NV Guest House (279749) enjoys an excellent location close to the beach. It's run by a friendly family, and has a variety of rooms. Newer rooms with priate bathroom and hot water cost Rs 350 (Rs 500 over Christmas), while the budgtet rooms are Rs 100. the restaurant, only a few metres from the beach, serves fresh seafood.

There are so many guesthouses in Goa, they change so quickly and LP write-ups are often on the subjective side. I'd just show up and stay somewhere you like the look of.

Have you tried 'The Thorn Tree' The Lonely planet board for such questions?

It may be better than here for such specific information.

Just south of Central Calangute, this simple place enjoys an excellent location close to the beach ans is run by a friendly family.

I agree with rhymer, budget guest houses change very often. Many lost their "friendly family-ness" and raise their prices once they're published in LP. Best to get there early, stow your bags somewhere and walk around to look at places. If you meet people along the way ask them for recs. Stop in a restaurant and relax and ask the people around you for recs. If you get there too late at night just find somewhere descent for one night an look around the next day. Budget places often won't take reservations or, if they do, don't really honor them once you arrive. If a paying customer comes for the last room you're out of luck.

I'm a regular on LP's forums and people are very helpful. You could do a search in the India branch for Calangute guest house and probably find recommendations.

Last time I was there - okay, 15 years ago - south of central Calangute was a little bit quieter than the northern part. Anyway this page says about the same as the others - 300-500 rs. Has a slightly different tel # - 227-9749.

AFAIK it's going to be getting hot and windy there right now - building up to the monsoon.

don't worry. seriously, don't. it's out of season. there'll be one million guesthouses with vacant rooms to choose from.

your biggest hassle will be beating off all the touts trying to take you to "their brother's" guesthouse, so that they can get a commission for taking you there.

just go and find the one you like the look of.

preferably far from calangute or baga.
