David Kelly and Dad

My late father was a reporter who witnessed the testimony of Dr. David Kelly at the Hutton Inquiry. I'm trying to find a photo of Mr. Kelly's testimony that shows the audience in the background, to see if I can spot my father.

In the article my father wrote, he states he was sitting about ten feet away from Kelly. The only photos I can find of Kelly's testimony are very close shots of his face. If anyone can tell me where to find a wider shot, I'd be grateful. Thank you!

I'd suggest diving into the vast historical archives of getty and corbis. call up a rep at those places if the websites don't do it for you. they are usually quite nice and helpful. I found a bunch of results on corbis site when searching for David Kelly already... (sorry, tough to link, frames and all that)

also pay attention to names of photographers who have shots from the days you are interested in on corbis or getty or in local publications. see if you can locate them via the web, email them a picture and ask if they have anything with him in it. some may not give you the time of the day but I usually find half of the people I approach like that to be quite nice and happy to make a few bucks from an otherwise unused shot.

also ... the guy behind strobist.blogspot.com is a news photographer, perhaps he has some additional ideas on whom you should contact. he also runs the flickr strobist pool, perhaps asking in the discussions there will get you some directions.

[Just to clarify, the Hutton Inquiry's purpose was to examine the circumstances around Dr Kelly's death; he wasn't at it. You are looking, I think, for photographs of Kelly's testimony to the Foreign Affairs Select Committee.]

Looking at what's available on this, it seems to me like all the photos are videograbs — perhaps because at the time Kelly testified he was clearly much less of a news story than he later became. You might try contacting Sky News or the Press Association to try to get hold of some of their video footage.

A Commons select committee in progress would be captured only by these people who I believe are, to all intents and purposes, BBC Parliament. This footage is then used by other broadcasters.

If memory serves, photography isn't permitted.

You need to contact either the BBC Parliament people or follow that link to the UK parliament office responsible for licensing. Both should have the footage of his testimony.

For reference, Kelly appeared at the Foreign Affairs Select Committee on 15 July 2003, and before the Intelligence and Security Committee the following day.
