Kids' book about squirrels?

Looking for the name of a childrens' book about squirrels.
It's been a long time, so I don't remember much. Here's what I do recall: This wasn't a picture book, it was thickish and had chapters. The book was set in some sort of forest/woodland and told from the perspective of a family of squirrels as they grew up, prepared for winter, stored nuts, etc. Very charming and sweet, but no talking squirrels (as I recall).
Books to rule out: The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin - saw it on Google and it doesn't sound right - or Earl the Squirrel.
