Surfing lessons in NY: Far Rockaway or Long Beach?

For a 15- or 20-person group of people with no experience in surfing: lessons (in New York) at Long Beach or Far Rockaway Beach? Also, which is more fun to be at and has more stuff to see around it? Finally, any recommendations for surf lesson companies?

Long Beach has a nice boardwalk, and the beach is a short walk from the "downtown" area (of which there are two - the "west end" and Park Ave. There are a lot of restaurants there, some surf shops, but not much to see.

Also, depending on what time of year you go, the ice skating rink may be open.
