how do I enable constant backlighting on my keyboard?

you know how sometimes the ambient light sensor will tell your mac book that it's so light in the room that you don't need the backlight keyboard? you know how in these situations it will prevent you from activating this feature using the F10 key?
I hate that. I also hate that it dims the backlight back down after I've adjusted it manually.

I would like to adjust the brightness of my keyboard manually and not have my mbp change it at all, battery life be damned. is there a software app or workaround that can help me achieve this?

I am aware that I can influence the backlight by placing my hand on top of the speaker grills but that's not really an option as it makes typing at speed rather difficult.

(this is not a question about a bug with my specific machine, I'm trying to find a way around a general design issue that bugs me with my mac.)
