Where can I find a good and reasonably priced hair cut for my curls in NYC?
Reasonable to me would be between $50 - $75. Devashan and Ouidad are out of my pocket book's league. I'm the kind of person who goes in and says, do whatever you like and hope for the best. This strategy has worked out well for me in the past and I'd like to employ it again.

There might be Devachan-trained salons in NY. They used to be listed on the Devachan website but they don't seem to be any longer. You might be able to find some via Google or Naturallycurly.com.

Have you thought about going to these places on the days/nights they need models for their stylists in training? I used to be used for a hair model for years at John Sahag. A 'normal' charge for a haircut was around $200-250, but I think I paid about $30. Yes, it took longer because as the 'junior' stylists cut (they weren't right out of school, but were new to Sahag's method of cutting so were considered students), the senior stylist would come around and critique them, adjusting stuff, etc. The very last time I was there, Isabella Rossellini was in the chair next to me. How cool was *that*?!
Ultimately, you'd end up with a kickass Madison Avenue haircut for a tiny fraction of the cost. If they liked your hair, they'd invite you back in a month for another haircut, or sometimes colour, etc. What was great was that I was able to hook up with the guy that styled my hair and he continued to cut it on the side for the next 15 years (he even did my hair for my wedding). I just followed him around to whatever salon he happened to be working out of. We agreed on the price (regardless of what the salon would be getting for their regular cuts) and kept the arrangement between us.
I know that there are several other salons that still do this. Call around and ask. I bet you'll get at least two or three hits.

Er:
I got a couple of excellent cuts from the guy whose studio is called Crops For Girls. This guy will only do short cuts and only on females. But for $45 it's an excellent value if you want a short cut. (The pics on his site are weirdly meh but what I got was lovely.)

Try Velvet Roses in Williamsburg (first stop off the L train). After a lifetime of being told by other Caucasian hairdressers that my hair is "so thick and hard to manage," I found the Hispanic ladies at Velvet Roses who really know how to handle curly hair. Plus their prices are very reasonable - around $45 for a haircut - and you hardly ever have to wait to get an appointment.

Good advice from theseampsgoto11 to find someone who knows how to cut your kind of hair. Ask curlyheads with good haircuts where they get theirs done; you'll make someone happy and get a good reccy. I go to Jason and Scott J on 86th (btwn 2nd and 3rd) but he doesn't necessarily specialize in curly hair, he's just overall good.

I used to get great cuts from Alexis at Xena's, with exactly the situation you describe. I don't know what her rates are now, but three years ago they were in your budget.
