I miss Quake 3

Is there anywhere out there where I can play Quake 2 or 3 online with a Mac?

I used to play back when GameSpy was around and I miss it. I'm not a big gamer. I don't own a single game anymore, and especially since getting a Mac even less so because I don't even know if I could run them.

My ideal scenario would be a way to pay to download Q3 and then be able to play online. If anyone knows a solution to this most urgent dilemma I would be grateful beyond words.

Just announced at GDC (Game Developers Conference): Quake Live.

Not to mention, all the Quake games run natively on Intel Mac (Windows & Linux too) because id software open source their game engines. Not sure if anybody still plays it online these days but maybe Quake Live will start up some more interest...

Also, Unreal Tournament 3 runs on Mac I believe - maybe worth a look. It's brand new, looks fantastic, it's not quake but with that pure deathmatch sport feel.

I was in the same scenario as you.

Since I bought Q3 but can't find the installer CD, I downloaded it from a torrent . This might not apply to you.

Then, download ioquake and The All Seeing Eye (like old GameSpy).

There are a bunch of servers from a clan called ES that are quite fun and are "adults only". If you launch The All Seeing Eye you will quickly find this servers; they are named something like "XXX ADULTS XXX ONLY XXX".

OpenArena is a game based on the Quake 3 engine that tries to be pretty faithful to the original, though all the maps, characters, etc. are original work. You can usually find a good game or two going on public servers, too. And it works on Mac.

Can't help you with the finding of Quake 3, but I used to occasionally get my Rainbow 6 and Unreal Tournament fix on Gameranger. Nowhere near as popular as the Spy, but at least it's something.
