Help me be awesome and remember a movie title.

Help me help my friend remember the title of a movie. (Or documentary?) It starts out with a voiceover over a dark screen - and the voiceover is interrupted by someone saying that voiceovers are lame (or something) and they should cut it out. And the voiceover-over-dark-screen ends. The movie (or documentary?) then progresses in a similar manner, being "edited" in that way, as they go along. Some well-known actors or director was involved. Also, it may have been filmed by a cast or crew member the same time they were filming some big-budget movie. Er, and that's about all I know.

Sounds like you're talking about Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Search for "Wi n0t trei a h0liday in Sweden thi yer?" to find the relevant part.

This reminds me of a few things:
- The Long And Short Of It (filmed by Sean Astin while he was shooting Lord Of The Rings)
- The trailer for The Comedian (cliched movie trailer voice-overs)
- The Orange mobile phone network cinema ads (example) which have involved various famous actors and the Orange guys changing stuff and generally ruining the point of the movie.

Maybe Adaptation?

Definitely Adaptation, although it reminded me of Monty Python intially as well.

Seconding Monty Python's Holy Grail. It was produced by llamas, you know.

Here's one that fits the filmed-concurrently angle: Blue in the Face

Thirding adaptation. Fits quite well (though not a documentary).

Most certainly Adaptation.

There's some (fake) "documentary" footage of the set/filming of Being John Malkovich included.

This is not the film, but this synopsis reminded me of "Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story", which was a pretty decent film. The book, however, is essential to any humor collection.

I dunno, that kind of sounds like the parts of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang I've seen, but I can't remember all of it very well and it doesn't sound quite like what you have in mind. But I may as well throw it out there.

Another one for Adaptation. Holy grail has a similar thing, but it's text and not a voice over. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang plays with the role of narrator as well, but not quite in the way you're describing. Adaptation does it dead on.

This is totally not what you're looking for (as you've already favorited an answer) but the teaser for Red vs. Blue has something like this.
