Elitest sites

Are there any sites more elitist than Mefi? By that I mean either more limited in membership, or more sought after and/or influential. The whole gmail / mefi swap, plus the periodic "expand the membership" pleas got me thinking about it, along with the occasional mentions of the site that is not to be named

Here's a candidate, in a slightly different sense: Sportsshooter.com. To join you have to pay $25 a year and prove that you're a professional quality sports photographer, by having them evaluate one or more of your photos.

I have no idea who does the posting on Memepool or what you do to become one of them. My theory is they're aliens.

I'd give all my gmail invites for a filepile password. Any takers?

The Well is elitist, but anyone can join for $6 a month. It's way less influential than it used to be, too. But it's still great.

I guess the word you're looking for here is exclusive. The people on the Well can be elitist, but if anyone can join just by paying money, it isn't very exclusive. Do I have you right, leotrotsky?

What is this filepile? It's remarkably opaque to googling.

It's the site we don't talk about.

bonaldi: the gmail currency has crashed; they're worth even less than the australian dollar now ;)

We're all friends here, bshort. Let's talk about it.

F F Pete, filepile is a place where people share random files. It is created / controlled by Andre Torrez. And no one talks about it. No, I am not a member. I am not cool enough, alas.

And no one talks about it.
So, is it something like this other club?
posted by Stoatfarm at 9:24 PM on June 29, 2004

So it is settled. We have to maintain elitism by never putting new user signups back up, and then creating our own filepile. Metafilter: Elitist, Marxist windbags that everyone else wishes they could be.
posted by Keyser Soze at 9:27 PM on June 29, 2004

Yeah, same idea.

For the same idea as filepile, try Yahoo Office Attachments.
posted by calwatch at 9:29 PM on June 29, 2004

That yahoo site is like filepile much like ask metafilter is like the something awful forums.

Not that I'd know, of course, since I've never heard of filepile.

Honest.

Flat Feet

The first rule of Filepile is - you do not talk about Filepile. The second rule of Filepile is - you DO NOT talk about Filepile.

Beth

You don't have to be cool to be a member of Filepile. (look at me! :-)) But you did have to have been a member in 2000 because new memberships closed years ago and you can't get invitations like Gmail.

The Edge is as elite as they come. They're so elitist, I don't even know how it chooses its members. But with active members such as Marvin Minsky, Richard Dawkins, and Brian Eno (plus I think they used to have Bill Gates, but he's not on the list any more), and a regular event called the Billionaire's Dinner, I think all you need is the ability to think really interesting thoughts.

Yeah, I managed to get into the whole memepool thing too, as much as they told me I had an account. They just never told me how or where to login.

"Shhhh, shut-up"

first rule duders.

humhum is exclusive too.

Does anybody know if filepile deleted inactive accounts? I used to have an account there, but I haven't been able to log on for quite some time.
posted by hootch at 10:34 PM on June 29, 2004

they delete unused accounts to save bandwidth.

Jesus Christ. If you FilePile geeks compare yourselves to Fight Club one more time...

I'll make soap out of you.

By the by, does anyone know how to recover a password from the site that can't be discussed openly? It's been a while and it'd be nice to log in again . . .

I want an invite to Hum Hum!

i had a filepile account, but I left the login cookie on the master image I used to update our labs, so I asked Andre to delete it. Plus, it was kinda pornpile more than anything else.

I was in Hell.com at one point...

and I'm also in the site that dares not speak it's name.

Therefore neither one can be very exclusive.

Well, if you're a Buffy fan...

whedonesque.com - Sorry, new signups are on hold at the moment.

Which is too bad, because it's really one of the best.
