Animal cruelty all over the place

Animal cruelty. Where does it start?

A couple of media reports dealing with all kinds of different aspects of the relationship of humans and animals got me thinking and wondering about the definition of animal cruelty.
I own no pet, the only contact with animals in my city life is the meat that I eat - direct inter-creatural interaction (almost) does not take place in my life.
I remember that when I was younger I used to enjoy teasing girls who were into horseback riding by claiming that riding a horse was pure animal cruelty - how would they feel carrying a little monkey on their backs kicking them in the sides for a couple of hours everyday.

This joke came back to me and I wondered: What's your take on animal cruelty? Does it start by banging in the head of a baby seal with a piece of wood or is "dominating" a dog by using a collar and a leash already the beginning, in which case every form of domestication of animal should be considered cruel and the only way would be to totally avoid any contact. Like in: "Hush! Stay in your goddam woods! We don't want anything to do with you."

So, dear Mefites, what's your take on this?

This post was deleted for the following reason: this is a chatfilter question where it seems you are asking "what do you guys think about this?" It might be good for big big question, or maybe it needs to be reworked so there's something you're getting at not just "hey here's a big contentious topic, let's talk about it here" You might also want to try MetaChat which is a bit more chatty or just figure out what the problem is you're getting at here. -- jessamyn
