What are the risks and benefits of intramedullary nails versus plating in a proximal shaft of femur fracture?

I think you need to ask a doctor. This is a really specific question to ask a bunch of (generally smart but not a lot of medically trained) strangers.

For really extensive information try my broken leg

I found it very helpful when dealing with a broken ankle that didn't heal. And good luck!

Quite simply, some fractures are indicated for intramedullary nailing, and some are indicated for plating. You're orthopedic surgeon definitely knows what to do, you don't need to concern yourself with the details.
