NewEnglandFilter: Need to use two curvy, slippery things for a short time

I'm heading out to Killington, VT early tomorrow morning for a day and a half of skifun. I've been skiing on my old K2 210 straight sticks since 1995, and have decided to leave them at home this time and finally enter the world of shaped skis. Can anyone recommend a good rental ski shop between Bangor and Killington? This includes Augusta, Portland, Portsmouth, Manchester, Concord, and Hanover. As it will be my first time on the curvy things and is a short trip, I'm just looking for a good value. Renting on the mountain is a last resort.

My first thought was LL Bean's, but in scanning their website, I don't see anything about downhill ski rentals.

Joe Jones has ski rentals, and the locations look convenient for your trip.

And again, while I can't find any reference to rentals, there is a Play It Again Sports in Portland, right off of 295.

Response by poster: Yeah I think Bean and the Kittery Trading Post are most likely not good options, and I'm almost certain Play It Again doesn't rent (nor do I think I'd want to rent from there, honestly). I'm surprised I never heard of Joe Jones -- have you ever used them?

Looks like Killington's ski shop is not any more expensive than renting from Joe Jones ($35 a day).

In your position, I would call around to shops near Killington, and see what the rates are for demos and rentals. My dad has been doing this for the past two seasons in order to try out different pairs of skis since his old ones busted.

The advantage of renting on the slopes is that you can usually come back in and try a different pair, which could be really helpful if you are exploring new styles.

Response by poster: Thanks for everyone's answers, but I should have probably been more clear in my original posting. I'm hoping to hear from folks about good experiences with specific rental shops along my route. I assumed I'd be renting from the mountain or rolling the dice with a shop close-by by default.

I'd recommend Northern Ski Works, which is right on Killington Rd. in Killington, on your left as you head up to the mountain. My family bought boots and skis from them at various times over the years (we used to live on the mountain) and always got phenomenal service. Can't say how their rental prices stack up to others, but this is where I would head if I were in your position.

Enjoy. Killington has such great terrain!
