Question: Vista ate my music.

I bought a Toshiba Satellite with Vista two weeks ago - until today everything was fine. Then the music came to an end. Itunes freezes on 0:00 and Windows Media Player simply won't play any of it - including the sample music that came with the machine. As of yesterday I was listening happily - how do I fix this?

I've tried looking on google and have found a couple of posts complaining about the same problem, but no solution. I checked my sound system and drivers - the device is working (I get sound effects on games), and the drivers are up to date. The error code I get from Windows Media Player is pretty much useless.

Help me please - I'm hoping it's something quirky that can be easily fixed.

Windows Media Player and iTunes are both bloated, buggy, and generally awful applications.

Perhaps you should consider alternatives.

I returned a Satellite to the store 2 weeks in because of the persistent issues. They were, it should be mentioned, worse than what you're describing here. One of the salespeople at the store said they'd had the same problem with theirs. Is there a chance this is not an mp3 file/player issue?

You tried rolling back via System Restore, right?

Just a note that I've had my computer for 5 months (it's a Compaq) and when I upgraded to the new iTunes last week, I had the same problem, so it may be on their end. Scared me to death that it had destroyed all of my music. Winamp will play it, though.

I had tried System Restore, in the end I rolled it back quite a piece and ended up getting it to work - hopefully it stays that way!
