For mpt: Can anyone point to an https site that still works in Netscape Navigator 2.02? ("I’m interested in what the interface looked like, for something I’m going to be posting here after my exams.")

mpt may be seeing that error message he describes on his site because the root certificates in NS2.02 have all expired - therefore every site he sees will have an apparently invalid cert. I'm not sure how you would update the root certs in NS2 but that would probably be necessary for anything to work at all, even assuming that 40-bit encryption was supported by the server.

perhaps you could set the computer's clock back so that it thinks its CA certs are still valid? and then install an ancient server cert (retrieved from an old backup tape?) on the server.
