Rogers is trying to silence me

I have several domains for my business and obviously several email addresses. How to use my smtp server settings with Rogers Cable?

Rogers won't allow me to use my own smtp server settings for outgoing emails and require me to use theirs. Up until now it hasn't been a problem and most folks don't look past the "from" address anyway. Recently though, some of my overseas clients ISPs seem to be treating my emails as bulk/spam and are blaming the rogers/yahoo servers for that. It seems they have been blacklisted by at least three of their ISPs.

Has anyone found a way to use their own smtp servers with Rogers or should I just look for another provider?

Best answer: Try using port 587 for your outgoing (SMTP) settings in your client.

It's pretty standard for an ISP to have a policy that you can't run any kind of server without paying for a more expensive package. I'm not sure if you'd really want to run your own anyway, because ideally you'd want 100% uptime and accessibility from anywhere.

I use Google Apps to handle email for my domains and I haven't had any problems with it. You can also use POP or IMAP instead of the Gmail web interface if you want to use a normal local client to read and send your mail.

FYI: Shaw does the same thing, unless you use one of the SSL ports.

I think I had problems with SBC/Yahoo at the start and had to fill out some kind of request to use port 25. It involved poking around the support web site a bit, then emailing support a couple of times, the end result was port 25 was opened up. As I recall I couldn't get the "port 587" solution to work for one reason or another.

Response by poster: Thanks ydnagaj - it was that simple. I seem to recall trying port 587 when I first started using my local client for my gmail a/c and it did not work. Works like a charm now.
