Standalone Player No Longer Necessary

Streaming Filter: Help me put streaming audio and videos back into the browser.

At some point many weeks ago, I adjusted some kind of setting in Firefox (or quicktime or windows media) that made any streaming media launch in the Quicktime application as a window. This was for a one-time-only problem in which I couldn't listen to a stream in the window without it crashing. Now, every time I visit my college's athletics site, its streaming video component forces a launch of Quicktime. Does anyone know what I did and how to undo it so the videos will play in the web player again?

First of all I suggest you uninstall QuickTime from your computer and install the QuickTime Alternative codec. I don't know if that would fix your problem, but personally I don't like the QuickTime player in general.

As far as how to fix it in FireFox, try going to Tools -> Options -> Content -> Manage (Under File Types). It will show what FireFox does when it encounters certain types of files. You want the video formats to be associated with a plugin, rather than with an application.

Response by poster: mp3s, the problem seems to be associated with .asx files (and, I assume, .asf files). There's no handling criteria in the Firefox tools. Can I add one?

I am not going to uninstall Quicktime. I run OSX and it's far too important to me.

Yeah I wasn't sure if you were on Windows or not, ignore my QuickTime uninstallation comment.

I have an entry for ASX in my FireFox options in the window I mentioned. For me it's setup to open in "Windows Media Player Plug-in Dynamic Link Library". I don't see a way to enter a new file extension, even though that would seem to make sense.

You may want to try upgrading your browser plug-ins to the latest versions. Also, FireFox has a new volunteer-run Live Chat service that might be more familiar with this issue.
