Help us identify this NY-themed, fairytale, mixed-media movie

My wife and I are trying to identify this film. It takes place in NY and probably specifically Manhattan. Has a certain late 80s early 90s feel to it. Possible contains both animation and normal film.

The plot is possibly about a girl going back and forth between the real world and an animated/fairytale world, possibly in order to save New York from an evil goblin? The music is memorable, but unfortunately not memorable enough.

Help our ailing collective memory.

This probably isn't it, but was it Cool World?

This is killing me because I can see it in my mind, and I'm pretty sure we're thinking about the same movie, but I have nothing more to go on than what you've already posted.

I want to say it had something to do with a hollowed-out tree that acted as a house? Am I on the right track?

Hmm, on second thought, it appears that this is the movie I was thinking of, and the only thing that doesn't fit with what you're describing is the mixed-media part.

This is a long shot, but could it be Temptation?

Response by poster: 'A Troll in central park' is along the right track.. but not hitting it, going to have a peak at a prieview for it just to be sure. I can totally see the landscape imaging for it in my mind and almost hear the music.. its killing us! its not temptation, enchanted or cool world. I want to say its called fairy tale in manhattan but that doesnt seem to be right.

Response by poster: nope, not a troll in central park. I think there is more film in this one, I havent seen enchanted but Im thinking it might have inspired it by the sounds of.

I think I know the movie you mean. Isn't she mad at her mother or something? In the movie I'm thinking of, I think it's all animated, but she does go back and forth between reality and some kind of fantasy world.

I would have probably gotten it from Netflix, which I canceled several years ago, so it's nothing recent like Enchanted.

Rock & Rule?

The film I'm thinking of is much more Japanese anime style than what A Troll in Central Park looks like (more family/Disneyesque), so I'm probably not thinking of the same movie after all. :)

Response by poster: I think the film is american made? (NY) otherwise british. I'm quite certain the main character is a female, who may have issues even with her mother or somthing- but its not Labrynth (which also fits that sort of description too) I even think I recall the leading acrtress had dark hair. phew

Best answer: The 10th Kingdom?

Response by poster: yay!!! thats it! I didn't recognise it from the trailer, I had to check out the soundtrack even to be sure and it had the song 'wishing on a star'- which music I could remember but not the words. Thanks, I can sleep in peace tonight. I had you all barking up the wrong tree with the animation stuff, its not got! it just goes between 'reality' and 'fairytale' for some reason I thought I recalled the use of animation to distinguish, maybe there is some.. I cant remember. Thank you !
