Cheap or free German gps maps for a magellan roadmate 1200?

I just got a Magellan roadmate 1200 for christmas without warning as a gift and am now in germany for a few days. It came loaded with maps for the United States only. I've done some searches on the magellan website for maps of frankfurt and berlin and have only found these very expensive software packages for Europe for 99 to 250 dollars. Is this what I need to use this thing in germany or are there cheaper or free alternatives? Its not worth doing for that kind of money and I probably will never use those maps again. I'm hoping there's some kind of trial or cheapware I can use. Any ideas hivemind?

I don't think it is possible to get a hand on those maps for a decent price.

After all, MediaMarkt (a popular German chain of stores sellig consumer electronics) recently offered the above-mentioned car navigation system complete with maps of Germany, Austria and Switzerland preinstalled on a SD-Card for 99 euros = 142 USD.

So it might as well be cheaper for you to just come here and buy exactly the same navigation system a second time - this pricing policy is just ridiculous.
