For PC... I'd say the first version of Windows MovieMaker posted by drezdn at 3:22 PM on June 14, 2004
VirtualDub is great and free, but I don't know if it does effects. Great for clips and reencoding, tho. posted by Hackworth at 3:55 PM on June 14, 2004
Adobe Premiere Pro is very intuitive. If you've used past versions of Premiere, this is not the same application. It's a completely new editor. Adobe just gave it the name of their old one.
If I was someone else, I might recommed that you buy the Premiere Pro Editors Workbook with it, but since I wrote that book, it would be wrong for me to recommend it. :-) posted by grumblebee at 4:02 PM on June 14, 2004
I second VirtualDub if all you're doing is linear editing. It has effects but I'm not certain about dissolves and stuff. posted by Grod at 9:29 PM on June 14, 2004
