Question: Sloe Gin = Fast Dunk?

I'm the recipient of a bottle of sloe gin. While I love plain old G & T's, what else can I do with this interesting purple stuff?

While there are many drinks sites out there the problem is that there are too many recipes and I've no idea how to start. This where I rely on you - the wise, the brave, the foolish - to narrow things down. Give me your best recipies involving sloe gin, AskMe! Pretty please?

Sloe gin is not a gin per se, but more of a liqueur.

A shot of sloe gin in orange juice is one of my fave drinks. It's known as a "sloe screw".

My mom's favorite drink was a sloe gin fizz:

1 oz sloe gin
1 oz gin
3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
1 oz simple syrup
3 - 4 oz soda water

Shake the gin, lemon juice and simple syrup with ice and strain into an ice-filled glass. Top it off with the soda water. You can garnish it with a slice of orange or a cherry (or both!), if you like snacks with your drinks.

I have enjoyed a Millionaire cocktail. You will do well with decent apricot brandy:

1 1/2 oz. Myers's Original Dark Rum
3/4 oz. sloe gin
3/4 oz. apricot brandy
Juice of 1 lime

Shaken and strained.

Note that there are several drinks which go by this name, and some of the others are nasty. This one isn't.

I second the sloe gin fizz. They're SO good. faineant's way is delicious - the simple syrup adds that authentic touch. I keep ss around to make mojitos and sloe gin fizzes. When I'm feeling lazy I make mine just like this recipe (it says there that the recipe came from the back of a sloe gin bottle). Not as sweet as the other recipe, but still, really refreshing and tasty.

There's always the...

Alabama Slammer:
1oz Sloe Gin
1oz Amaretto
1oz Southern Comfort
2oz Orange Juice

Shake all ingredients and strain into a highball glass full of ice.

There's many variations on the recipe, I like this one. The aforementioned Sloe Gin Fizz is mighty tasty, too.

Drink a Sloe Gin Fizz while listening to Loretta Lynn's duo with Jack White on repeat. It's called the Portland, Oregon and it's awesome, and has made me want to drink Sloe Gin Fizz by the pitcher.

Here's my sloe gin fizz recipe. It isn't very authentic -- we asked bartenders and improvised trying to make ourselves what we were getting when we ordered in bars -- but it's yummy.

1 part gin
1 part sloe gin
3 parts sweet 'n' sour mixer
2 parts 7-Up

Serve over lotsa ice.

Oh yes! Sloe Gin! Awesome.. grandpa in-law made his own, and he always served it straight, with a handful of Pringles. We always got tipsy, and it never seemed to affect him.

Might try some of the recipes suggested here too.

A Sloe Comfortable Screw up against the Wall. As the name implies, it involves Sloe Gin, sometimes Vodka, Southern Comfort, Orange Juice, and Galliano. Here's one recipe.

I'm looking forward to trying one of these tonight (I do not know where the recipe came from, it popped up on a mailinglist I'm on).

"Sloe Soul 75

A wonderful variation of a French 75, with sloe gin and Chambord, which brings a hint of hedgerow fruit to the drink named in honour of a First World War howitzer.

25ml/1fl oz sloe gin
10ml/1/3fl oz Chambord raspberry liqueur
10ml/1/3fl oz fresh lemon juice
Sparkling wine or champagne, to top

Cut a full-length spiral of lemon zest. Shake the first three ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled champagne flute. Fill the glass with the sparkling wine, garnish with zest."

Back in the 70's, my mom used to drink simple sloe gin and ginger ale once in a while, as I recall. Although I haven't thought about it for years, I do remember tasting it as a kid and thinking that it was pretty much the best thing ever.
