Lady Sovereign. Seconding MIA. Lauren Hill, esp w/the Fugees, wish I knew more and will watch this thread closely. Other than that, I tend to lean towards old school stuff...how about Salt 'n' Pepa or Da Brat? posted by SassHat at 8:49 PM on December 10, 2007 [1 favorite]
Seconding Jean Grae and adding What What?
Both have worked with The Herbaliser to great effect. posted by beaucoupkevin at 8:51 PM on December 10, 2007
Ms Dynamite. Princess Superstar. Meshell Ndegeocello. Remy Ma are a few off the top of my head. posted by carabiner at 8:59 PM on December 10, 2007

by the way, beyonce, jill scott, badu, mary, et al are not hip hop or rap. posted by fumbducker at 9:03 PM on December 10, 2007
They're not 100% hip-hop, but ESG is funky in a nice old school sort of way. Queuing em up right now :) posted by waxboy at 9:08 PM on December 10, 2007
beaucoupkevin: uhm, What? What? is Jean Grae. She changed her name like five years ago or so.
OP: are you looking for MCs or R&B singers? You say hip-hop, but you've got a list there that's 40% singers. If you're interested in singers as well, that opens up a lot of possibilities. posted by YoungAmerican at 9:08 PM on December 10, 2007

MIA.
But whatever you do, don't listen to this. It'll be in your head all week, and it'll make you feel dirty inside. posted by BitterOldPunk at 9:56 PM on December 10, 2007

Oh crap, how could I forget Boss. Reading that entry, I didn't know she had released "the six million dollar mixtape". Now I have to figure out how to find that, because I used to love her. Boss is great on Spice-1's song Don't Ring the Alarm. And for another one-hit wonder rapper, try Mocha (ft Timbaland) on "Runnin Shit".
Also Da Brat (she's annoying a lot of the time, but catch her on a good track [Sock it to Me, Total's No One Else Remix{foxxy Brown is good on that one too}] and she's good). posted by cashman at 7:54 AM on December 11, 2007
Angie Martinez: If you only listen to one song, make it Go! Muthafucka, which may be the most deliciously cathartic fuck-you song I have ever heard.
Also, Stink Mitt, but not for the faint of heart. posted by loiseau at 9:27 AM on December 11, 2007
Nthing Jilly from Philly, L-Boogie and MIA. As with male rappers, most female rappers suck, and there's a lot less of them, so you're going to have a real hard time finding even a decent female MC. posted by shotgunbooty at 9:50 AM on December 11, 2007
Northern State. The EP before the first full-length was better. The latest album, from what I've heard, is not straight-up rap any more. posted by RobotHeart at 2:18 PM on December 11, 2007
Rah Digga is pretty dope. She Collaborated with Lauryn Hill on the Fugees Hit "Cowboys" From The Score, Remember that? they killed it. Rah also had another good appearance On De La Soul's "Set the Tone" off their album Art-Official-Intelligence. And Lauryn is the best technical female rapper soul sistah there ever was.
