I have two invites - basically I can give away two accounts since I already have one - and I don't know what to do with them. I know there's been some interest around here in getting one, so the first two people to email me (email in profile) can have one.

I was kind of hoping that would happen, but the invites don't seem to show up automatically; supposedly, they were there when I first got the account, and then they showed up again today, seemingly in everyone's gmail account.

Does anybody know what to do if you get more invitations that you need? I got one last night through Gmail Swap yet I think some kind MeFier sent me an invite before I could take myself off the list. If I just don't respond to it, does that mean it goes back to them and they can use it to somebody else? Or can I just forward the e-mail on to some other deserving person?

My understanding, based on almost nothing, is that once the invite has been sent, it is out of your hands. On my end, I see a link at the top of my gmail inbox that says "invite a friend" Clicking that sends me to a page where I have to enter a firstname/lastname combo and an email address with the option to add a personalized message and then the folks at gmail email out an invite to that person with a link they click to sign up. That's it. One of the reasons it's tough to hand out gmail accounts in this AskMe fashion is that if, say, me and mathowie both send you an invite at the same time, you can accept them both, but you can't accept one invite and return the other one, though you may be able to pass it on [looks like yes according to vacapinta]. So, in order to maximize usefulness, there needs to be some sort of way to make sure that an invite isn't sent to someone who already got one. I leave it to you fine people to figure out what that mechanism should be.

So, if you change your mind or sent it to the wrong email etc. you can, as the inviter, re-purpose that email as well..

Someone (not on mefi) actually tried to invite me yesterday, and the invite has yet to show up in my box. I trust that he really sent it. He was speculating that maybe I haven't gotten it because google was putting a delay on the invites the way that they put a delay on orkut invites a while back. But this thread makes me doubt that theory.

Can anyone verify that they received an invite at a yahoo email address, recently, soon after it was sent?

bingo, it is known that invites sent to yahoo have been going into the bulkmail folder. have you checked there?

if not, as i mentioned above, have them look in their sent box and re-send that email to another address or just cut-paste the url for you into IM :)

lnicole - yup, my email got tanked at the most critical moment. I've been a happy earthlink customer for a few years, but my billing got fouled up and they turned me off. I did manage to sort out the whole deal after extensive phone calls to earthlink and my bank, but in the end I was so frustrated I told them to cancel the account. I thought they'd let me go till the end of the month, but nooooo. Now I missed my chance to email like the cool kids! So now I have the yahoo account which I'll keep until I get hooked up. I'll be getting a new ISP in the next few days, but I'll hold that email aside to avoid further confusion.

what really hurts is this mess is all my fault for moving bank accounts around and not updating with earthlink.

I like jacquilynne's list and appreciate all the hard work, but there has to be an easier way to track all this. I have invites too, and we may have more than enough to meet actual expressed demand...if we could find all of it. It's also hard to know who's been covered and who hasn't.

Since I've never wiki'd before, I decided to post at the MeFi Gmail Wiki. Perhaps that might be a better way to go? When we send an invite, we can amend the "Wanted" list to say one was sent and by whom?

I think the wiki is working for this. I gave my two out, and moved folks from "Those who need an invitation" to "Pending Invitations." If someone doesn't reply, I can always move 'em back and try and "adopt" someone else.

Just refreshing the page now and then shows things are turning over nicely. There are almost as many invites than requests (more invites, if you don't count the recycled list).

As posted in another of now many MeFi Gmail threads: I'm a believer. Go with the wiki. Otherwise these request-and-answer threads are all going to balloon to 100 comments... I'm wondering if the floodgates are opening, especially in the wake of Yahoo!'s big mail move. I got three invites this morning, gave them to MeFites, and not an hour ago, I got five more.
