WastingThisWeek'sQuestionFilter: How do the locals pronounce "Cicott" in Lake Cicott, IN, USA? I've driven through that fair burg many many times in the last 25 years, and every time, I wonder the same thing. It's ambiguous from a phonetics standpoint, and Hoosiers don't seem to care a fig for phonetics anyway, when place names are involved. Please help me astound my traveling companions the next time I'm traversing beautiful Indiana.

I'm from Indiana originally and I think I've heard it pronounced "Si-Sawt" - "Si" as in "Silver" "Sawt" as in "Saw". But who know really. :-)

I'd say SEE-cot. Like Eddie Cicotte of the 1919 White Sox. :)

Though my being from IL isn't helping at all in this matter, as I don't even know where it is. Still, my intuition is, seecot.

For some reason I first read "IL," not "IN," sorry. Never mind about my IL comment. But we're close by. :)

I used to live near there and we pronounced it "Sy-kut." Kind of like "circuit" but with the "sci" sound from science instead of the "cir" sound. I hope that makes sense.

Looks like it's a form of the name Chiquot, which my French-learning girlfriend says would be pronounced "ch ee coht." So, there's that.
