Is it possible to buy .su email address?

Ideally, this would be an xmas present for someone who could just have his mail forwarded from that alias to his real email account. I'm also concerned that a provider for this may not be very reliable, but that's ok as this would mostly be a vanity address.

If not, can an American buy an .su domain name without getting into some kind of trouble with ICANN (or whomever)?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.su suggests you can, for around USD25 - although there may be a tussle as to whether the TLD gets closed down or not.

RU-Center looks like the spot to get them or at least pre-order. According to the title of a press release, it looks like the prices may be changing after Dec 3.

The .su TLD is supposed to have been phased out, since the Soviet Union is no more. NIC.ru will sell you a .su domain for $23.60,
though, and do mailforwarding for an additional 600 rubles/year (about $25 today).

I'm with Ulleskelf: the whole thing could go quite pear-shaped if ICANN puts the big nix on the TLD. Is it worth $50/year?

Has ICANN shut down a TLD before? Do they pretty much tell everyone "oh well, find another place?" I can see halting new registrations or transfers or something.
