Apartment in Savannah

What area should I search for an apartment in Savannah/Ft. Stewart area?

I'm being assigned to Ft. Stewart, GA for one year beginning early December. I think that I would prefer living in Savannah proper, but I'm not at all familiar with the area.

I want to be close to shopping, dining, entertainment. I want to be able to take a taxi when I go out at night. I prefer trendy areas.

I don't mind a long commute, but would prefer to keep it under 45 mins.

Suggestions?

In my opinion, the only place to live in Savannah is the historic district. Outside of that area, in my personal experience, is totally blah. (That is, I wouldn't go into Savannah to live anywhere besides the historic district; you could live closer to Ft. Stewart.) Great restaurants/bars/shopping, and you can walk everywhere. It is, however, a very small area.

According to Mapquest that's a 57 minute commute, though.

I lived in Savannah for a year and did so for that area alone. Maybe there are others here who have more experience with other neighborhoods. Actually now that I think about it I do recall other very nice neighborhoods, populated with houses that I will never be able to afford, but I don't know if those were just residential areas or if there was the shopping/dining/entertainment as well. And I don't know if there was adjacent affordable housing. :)

Savannah resident here, what's your budget?

Downtown is nice, but of course, more expensive but if you don't have a car, it's THE place to live in Savannah as it's extremely walkable, with plenty of restaurants, shopping and clubs. Mind you, downtown can be considered a big place, anywhere from Victory Drive to the south, MLK Blvd to the west and Broad Street to the east.

Keep in mind that Fort Stewart is about 40 minutes away from downtown Savannah, give or take, depending on traffic.

I'd recommend somewhere around Forsyth park, which is an epicenter for concerts and festivals and what have you. Anything directly on the park will be expensive, but 2 or three blocks away can be quite nice. If you decide to go that route, be careful about getting too close to sections of MJK or Broad street, as they can be a bit rougher.

That should be doable but tight in the area around Forsyth, it's in the Historic District, there's a grocery store two blocks on the east side, an the neighborhood is beautiful.

Have you checked the local newspapers yet? Also try calling the big arts college downtown, SCAD, and saying you're a new student and need help finding a place to live. When I was moving down here they sent a big pack of listings.

116 E. Gaston-$790 --very nice location, almost right on Forsyth. I'd try for this.

801 1/2 Seller Ave.-$450 very far from Forsyth, a bit rougher neighborhood

808 E. Park Ave.-$750 see above

730 1/2 Anderson-$725 see above

654 E. 36th St.-$675 -- Ha, that's a bit further down from me, generally nice, somewhat rough. The blocks tend to vary in their personality and safety, so I can't so much about this one. My block, in the 500s is mostly quiet, with only one occasionally loud neighbor, no crime.

1408 1/2 E. 49th St.-$500 forget it, way too far to walk anywhere.

So try to stick within the 200-500 block from Forsyth and you should be fine.

The historic district if definitly the only "trendy" area in Savannah. HOWEVER, it is a lot cheaper to live in an apartment on Whitmarsh or Wilmington Island and is quite beautiful. It is on the water, closer to the beach and has several cute little mom and pop stores and resturants as well as a few chain grovery stores.

Let me know if you need anymore info, I'm a Savannian. (Yes, thats really what we're called.)
