Karaoke on home DVD player?

do I have to buy a karoke machine to play karaoke dvds, or can I use an ordinary dvd player?

I suspect that it depends on the kind that you have, the one I played with many years ago did, in fact, use normal DVDs with subtitles, and the device itself had all the mic inputs and amplifiers to be used in a party scenario.

I suppose it's possible that some of the newer ones might use something more proprietary though.

I've done it on a normal DVD player. How expensive would it be to buy one and try it out?
