Could you suggest an easy to use freeware alternative to FRAPS for recording video in World of Warcraft?

Is the only requirement free, or were there technical issues with FRAPS we need to consider as well?

No, Fraps is amazingly fantastic for the 30 second video it lets me make in trial mode.

I'm hoping to avoid $37 to go longer.

You could try kkapture by Farb-Rausch. It's designed to record demoscene demos (which are non-interactive music video style presentations) but may possibly work for WoW in some contexts, but it's unlikely.

Worth a try considering it's free though!

It's been a while since I used FRAPS, but there used to be an older version that didn't have the 30 second limit (though it may have other limitations). I think it may have been version 1.9d.

OK, I Googled about a bit (I promise to do that before answering next time). Fraps 1.9d does not record sound and only supports low res (640 x 480). Does WOW even go that low?

One setup guys like KOiN used to use to make machinima was a digital camcorder attached to the video line out from the video card. If your card supports dual monitors and you have a digicam sitting around, this might be your best option.
