Looking for recommendations for Slovakia for New Year

I'm looking for recommendations for Slovakia in Wintertime. We're a group of around 10 wanting to travel 3-4 hours max from Bratislava.

Firstly
We hope to stay in a house/hostel somewhere in beautiful surroundings but not too far off the beaten track.

We're a mixed bunch walking/skiing/sightseeing where we are, as well as a little apre ski at the end of the day. We're hoping not to that get to bored or get cabin fever and try to kill each other.

Does anyone know of any good places to stay in the mountains near Bratislava?

Donovaly seems to be mentioned as quite a good place, but any other suggestions would be welcome.

Also, what about accommodation? Where are the best places to look? Does anyone have any great experiences they'd like to share? Does anyone have any useful info as to where to look? We're all on a bit of a budget, so not looking for mondo costly options, maybe a chalet/house for the group of us.

We're hoping to make this year a great one, so many thanks in advance for your input.

Neither of them are in Slovakia, but Vienna is an hour away on the train, and Budapest is about 2 hours away.

Response by poster: Thanks deadmessenger, I've been to Budapest before and loved it, and was certainly thinking about a trip to Vienna before so many of us signed up for the trip.

We're more looking for a 'back to nature' type of place in a smallish town with some skiing and natural beauty around us. We'll keep searching though.
