How to pretend I'm me?

How do I access 'my documents' on a HD rescued from a defunct laptop which is now connected to my desktop via USB? I get the message: "access is denied". I am running Windows XP Home Edition.

I suspect that the folders remember the user name and password from the laptop - which I know - but don't know how to use them.
I thought of rebooting the computer using this HD but don't know how to do that from the USB.

Any ideas, please?

Best answer: I had the same issue when rescuing a friend's HDD. See if changing the ownership of the files and folders works for you.

Good luck.

Step by step to taking ownership:

Right click folder > Properties
Security
Advanced Settings
Owner
Choose Administrators
Make sure to check that box at the bottom.
Click OK
This will take a while.
And then all files are accessible.
