What is this stuff on my apartment wall?

ApartmentFilter: Help me identify this wall discoloration.

Near the air vent on the adjoining wall in one of the bedrooms in our apartment is a brown discoloration that is raised in the center of each of the spots. It looks kind of like a splatter on the wall. Recently the raised areas have begun to crack. I could easily pop off chips of discolored paint at this point. It doesn't seem to have a smell. I'm guessing this is some kind of mold, but I have no idea. Any thoughts?

A picture might be helpful, but it sounds like you're describing water spots.

Sounds like water getting onto the plaster and then drying, perhaps repeatedly like in the case of a leak that allows rain in rather than a slow drip from a bad pipe.
