[NYCFilter] Extended Stay in on around Manhattan

A couple of friends of mine are going to study in NYC for a period of 6 weeks starting mid November. Any suggestions regarding places offering extended stay?

Hotel might not be an option since it is too expensive.

Renting an apartment has proven a little difficult because of the short term of the rent and because they needed it fully equipped.

So they are looking for options of places that offer "extended stay".

Does anyone have experience with that? Should they look instead for an appartment?

Craigslist has a sublets/temporary section, a furnished executive apt will be much more expensive.

Are they guys or women? If they're women and they don't mind a peculiar, retro experience, there are a couple of women's residences that offer cheap (by New York standards) long-term accommodation. They were set up in the early 20th century as safe, chaperoned places for well-bred young working women to live, and they basically retain a lot of that character. Gentlemen callers must be entertained in the parlor. Try the Brandon or the Webster. I'm pretty sure there are others.

craichead,

one guy, one girl.

Nevertheless your suggestion looks interesting.

Seconding Craiglist's sublets/temporary section. It's a random mix of people going out of town, people looking for roommates, and people who own and maintain apartments specifically to rent out for short stays.

Also consider posting in the housing wanted section. I did a few weeks ago and got a buncha responses.

I love vrbo.com for virtually any length of stay in a variety of furnished studios-to-mansions.

The YMCA's (and the 92nd st Y which is Jewish) in New York City rent rooms aimed at this population. You can also try the Kolping Society. They have houses in Manhattan and the Bronx, but I think the one in Manhattan is men only.

In my neighborhood there are also room rental agents who rent rooms, usually for appx $125/week. I've been renting through this method (2 different agencies & 2 different rooms) since I came to NY in Feb. 'O5. I arrived with a 3 night hotel reservation and found a decent (but very barebones) place in 2 days.

You usually need three weeks rent to start. 1st and last weeks rent and 1 week as the broker's fee.

Some brokers hold the last week. This is not ideal as sometimes they go out of business, but amortized across more than a year of cheap rent it wasn't a big deal when it happened to me.
