Best internet options in Iraq?

My friend is going to Iraq to work for an NGO and he needs to buy his own internet feed, probably a satellite connection. Do you have recommendations or know where to get recommendations/reviews on different options?

If you don't get an answer here try asking at Lightstalkers. It's a forum for photojournalists.

If he does need to bring his own, then what he needs is a device colloquially referred to as a BGAN.

What kind of NGO would have an office in Iraq without Internet?

I know nothing about these guys other than what I've read but iDirect seem to offer a number of 'internet by satellite' services (1,2 )which cover Iraq and which are tailored towards individuals rather than organisations.

Having said that we're talking about individuals who are in the position to shell out USD500/month. If you were living somewhere where you could buy it cooperatively and share over a WLAN I guess you could make the price less painful.

Response by poster: Brian: He is setting up at a new location and doesn't want to use the military net.
