Question: Best driving song?

Best driving song?

I just replaced my crappy car's crappy broken stereo with a new wizz bang cd/ mp3 player which i can plug my mp3 player into (did the wiring myself and saved $80, hooray).

I want to put together a killer playlist, so I'd like to know what's your favourite driving song? Any style or genre is welcome, I have very broad tastes.

Nthing Radar Love.
Especially with a 5-speed on a fun curvy highway at night.
(Takes me back to when I was single, childless, and making semi-frequent roadtrips... Even with random radio choices, it always came on at the most fun part of the drive.)

I also agree with some Pearl Jam, most Tom Petty, and some Peter Gabriel tunes.

Criminy, I need to go on a road trip by myself. It's been too long.

And, really, anything you enjoy singing at the top of yr respiratory organ of choice.

Absofrigginlutely. Your favourite belter songs. I also love heavy guitar-driven rock like Spiderbait or Rage Against the Machine.

But for long drives (I'm Australian, so I know long drives) music needs a touch of melancholy:

- Simon and Garfunkel - The Essential S and G compilation is great
- Eagle Eye Cherry - 'Are You Still Having Fun?'
- Lauryn Hill - I have an awesome a capella version of 'That Thing You Do' with Queen Latifah rapping that is just beautiful, plus the rest of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
- Wu-Tang Clan - 36 Chambers
- Skid Row - '18 and Life', at the top of your lungs
- Melanie - especially 'Lay Down', but most of her songs are great for driving

And I was moved to tears once by listening to Lionel Richie's 'Hello' driving in the rain, through the rainforest, at night.

Is Chicago, is not Chicago or even better, Screenwriter's Blues by Soul Coughing--"you are going to Reseda to make love to a model from Ohio whose real name you don't know". Rolling by Soul Coughing, or pretty much anything off the Soul Coughing CDs El Oso and Ruby Vroom. Los Angeles by X, Thousand Dollar Car by the Bottle Rockets, I'm in Love with My Car by Queen, Walking in LA by Missing Persons, Mexican Radio by Wall of Voodoo. I guess my driving songs are dominated by thoughts of LA in the past. Also, U2's Unforgettable Fire was once an amazing soundtrack to a road trip through the deserts of the southwest.

Searching for a truer sound
Can't recall the call letters
Steel guitar and settle down
...and if you're not actually driving but want to feel as if you are, look up "Chill Out" by KLF.

(Ok, I'm a *particular* type of driver).

Or try the following when you're actually driving (some are good for singing, too, especially when you're alone):

* Boards of Canada - Music has the right to children - "Telephasic Workshop" (great if you have a good sound system)
* Buddha Bar 1 CD 2, last track - Willy DeVille - Demasiado Corazon (Live Version)
* Bee Gees - Staying Alive
* Billy Idol - Eyes Without A Face
* Booker T. & The MGs - Time Is Tight
* Duran Duran - The Chauffeur
* Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Fanfare For The Common Man
* George Thorogood - Bad To The Bone
* John Paul Young - Love is in the air
* KC And The Sunshine Band - Shake Your Bootie
* Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
* Primitive Radio Gods - Standing Outside A Broken Phonebooth
* Robert Plant - Big Log (if you listen to nothing else, listen to this)
* TISM - Greg! The Stop Sign!
* Tom Jones - Delilah (no rude remarks, thanks)
* Travelling Wilburys - End Of The Line
* The Blues Brothers version of "She caught the Katy"

The Road goes on Forever and the Party Never Ends - Robert Earl Keen

PS - I am a fan of Skreemer for a great and easy mp3 search tool to test drive these songs out.

Van Halen - Running With The Devil. Essential.

Cake - The Distance. Also essential.

And seriously, do NOT miss the Modern Lovers' "Roadrunner," as mentioned in the first post. It is *the* quintessential driving song.

yes, yes, yes

Makes you want to drive or as Steve Earle puts it

"Love to hear the steel belts hummin' on the asphalt"

But not mentioned yet is NRBQ -Me and the Boys

"Muffler loud - but we love that sound"

There's no doubt in my mind as to the greatest road trip song ever, and I'm astonished not to see it mentioned yet in this thread: Bruce Springsteen's "Thunder Road."

Honorable mentions (seconding some):
"Born to Run," Bruce Springsteen
"Life Is a Highway," Tom Cochrane (I like the recent cover of this by Rascal Flatts, too)
"I Drove All Night" - there three versions that I'm aware of: Cyndi Lauper (the original), Roy Orbison, and Celine Dion. It will not surprise you to learn that Orbison's is the best.
"Me and Bobby McGee" - Janis Joplin
"America" - Simon and Garfunkel

Also see this thread over at the Road Trip America forums.
